I gave myself to the long retreat. At Shadowbrook
I loved the country. I loved the food. I was young. I was seventeen.
I came from a happy family. It was an old-fashioned family with
vertical authority. My father was a somewhat impatient man, and
so, when I entered, I bought the whole package. I bought it completely.
I was in the Society for some years before I heard of active obedience
as opposed to passive obedience.
As chaplains we try to see Roman Catholic patients
who are having major surgery. We try to see anyone who wants to
see us. We try to have a longer, more in-depth, more CPE-oriented
visit. We have a Eucharistic ministry.
I have always been guided by this saying of St.
Albert the Great, "Commit every particle of your being in all
things, eagerly and with perfect trust to the most sure and unfailing
providence of God."
